The Weight of the Recycling Industry
In a world which increasingly depends on its IT industry, Europe recycles only 35% of its electronic waste. The Confederation of European Waste-to-Energy Plants highlighted the fact that 80 million tonnes of waste is still sent to landfills sites each year in the EU. And the whole recycling chain might be weakened due to considerably lower commodity and energy prices. We are still far from a "recycling society". In spite of it all good progress had been made in a number of areas. This is the case for the paper recycling industry. Paper is the most recycled product in Europe. Of course, recycling is essential because it saves natural resources. But also it creates jobs in small and medium-size enterprises. This industrial sector represents 5,500 companies, 300,000 local jobs and a turnover of € 95 billion (study EuRIC). Finally, all the studies so far conducted show that natural resources are being depleted rapidly. Today more than ever, the recycling of waste is an absolute priority.
