Digital Pollution is a tremendous Challenge....for all of us

This pollution is primarily due to our billions of computers, tablets and smartphones. Here are some figures and projections abstracted from Statista which is one of the most important global business data platform. Tablets users worldwide is evaluated at about 1.28 billion people. As of January 2021 there were 4.66 billion active internet users in the world. And the number of smartphone subscriptions worldwide today is more than 6 billion. And those numbers are constantly rising. These products are called interfaces. In brief, interface is the place where people and things - for ex. you and your computer - meet. But the huge pollution also comes from the data we produce at every moment. These figures are spectacular (Re.G.Pitron). The global digital industry consumes so much water, materials and energy that its footprint is triple than a country like France or England. Today digital technologies account for 10% of the world's electricity generation and emit also 4% of global CO2 emissions, or just under twice the global aviation sector. Finally, just a few other figures which could help "promoting digital sobriety" (Re.T.Lebleu). A simple digital web search emits approx. 7g of CO2. Everyday Google processes more than 3.5 billion search queries. And everyday an average of 294 billion emails are sent. Online video streaming produces 30 million tons of CO2 emission, that is equivalent to a country like Spain. And it must be added that there are at least 40 metals present in a smartphone. And we should of course recall the alarming issue of e-waste. So, we all need to think about a more moderate and responsible use of all these new technologies and devices.
