The European Social Model is under Pressure
"The crisis in Europe is dramatic. A financial crisis has turned into a job crisis. In some countries there is now a lost generation of young people, out of a job, out of training, and out of the market. More people are becoming permanently inactive and unemployable" Norway's P.M. Stoltenberg said on the occasion of a recent International Labour Organization's meeting (ILO). And according to the latest ILO data, the crisis has left over 26.3 Million europeans unemployed. The ILO is more particulary concerned about youth employment crisis, and in fact young people are three times more likely to be unemployed than adults. It's interesting to stress that in 2011, the unemployment rate of Switzerland's youth was 7.7% compared with the OECD,34 members including Europe, average of 16.2%. It's obvious that young europeans deserve a better future. It's urgent to tackle an unemployment which affects close to 40% of the youth generation in southern Europe. Governments still focus on austerity measures and tighten fiscal policies but it's now high time to spur economic growth.
