The need to improve Transparency to combat non-democratic Regimes
A large number of NGO’s are doing sterling work. We particularly welcome the reports produced by Transparency International (TI) and Freedom House. The latest corruption perception index (TI index 2018) ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption. The top countries -least corrupted- are Denmark, New Zealand, Finland, Singapore and Switzerland. The bottom countries -most corrupted- are North Korea, Yemen, South Sudan, Syria and Somalia. It is also worth noting that Freedom House considers these top countries as free, with the exception of Singapore which is considered only partly-free. By contrast, the bottom countries are all considered as not free. TI considers that the top performing region in the world is Western Europe and the EU. Not surprisingly, the lowest scoring region is Sub-Saharan Africa where corruption and poverty go hand in hand. If we focus on Asia, India is ranked in 78th place and China in 87th place. Let us give the final word to Patricia Moreira, TI’s managing director: « With many democratic institutions under threat across the globe -often by leaders with authoritarian or populist tendencies- we need to do more to strengthen checks and balances and protect citizens rights ».
