The needs of a Growing Global Population pose a threat to our Planet

The world’s population now stands at 7.8 billion. We are adding over 200,000 people to our planet every day. As a result, by 2025 world population will be over 8 billion people and is expected to reach 9 billion in 2040 and 11.2 billion in 2100 (Re.World Population Clock). It is simple common sense to stress that such a development will put enormous pressure on Earth’s resources. Let us recall that humans already « overuse » the planet. Today, we are using nature 1,75 times faster than Earth’s ecosystems can regenerate. The truth is that if the entire world’s population lived like American citizens we would need 5 Earths to meet our demands (Re.UN). We will thus have to adopt new life styles in particular in developed countries. And of course, in the current climate change crisis we urgently need to seriously consider the issue of overpopulation. Indeed, it is a confirmed fact that in many developing or emerging countries access to food and water is continuously worsening because of the overpopulation and problems of migration that arise from it. It is also indisputable that overpopulation has a very negative impact on the global environment and results in massive urbanization , water pollution, deforestation and over-farming. The ecosystems which produce and regenerate our resources are too often threatened, polluted or even destroyed. It is no longer tenable. And uncontrolled overpopulation can only exacerbate the current worrying situation. The steadily declining of world fauna and flora demonstrates this situation very clearly. Finally, it is important to underline that the serious issue of the global regulation of the world’s population cannot be ignored by the International Community anymore !
