Uncontrolled Urbanization has facilitated the Spread of the Coronavirus
Most scientists agree that the current health crisis is a « perfect example » of the close relationships between the hyper urbanization and new or re-emerging infectious diseases. And indeed, a rapidly increasing urbanization but also a poorly controlled urbanization often combined with overcrowding is the best recipe for a health disaster. Today some 55% of the world’s population -4.2 Billion- live in cities. And by 2050, with the urban population more than doubling its current size, nearly 7 of 10 people in the world will live in cities (Re.World Bank). The building and expansion of towns always require more land at the expenses of the forested areas and wildlife. Most experts have highlighted that the increasing proximity between humans and wildlife has greatly accelerated the transmission of the Covid-19. The new coronavirus outbreak appears to be tied to a contact with an infected animal in the Chinese megacity of Wuhan (Approx.11 Million inhabitants). In fact, 70% of new infectious diseases begin with human-to-animal contact (Re.Direct Relief-T.Meyers). That includes HIV/AIDS, Ebola and SARS. Uncontrolled urbanization clearly leads to the destruction of the countryside. And finally, we must look again at the fundamental question of overpopulation. The truth is that overpopulation is compounding all the other problems.
